All cotton wool is not the same when it comes to properties, which can differ considerably depending on the composition, be it cotton, cellulose or a blend of both. The resulting different characteristics can purposely be created in such a way that they satisfy the specific demands that can be placed on cotton wool products.

Originally designed for medical purposes only, the application of cotton wool has undergone substantial changes over time, whereas cotton wool is now mainly used for cosmetics and hygiene purposes. In its various different presentations, such as cotton buds, pre-formed balls and pads or folded in pleats, cotton wool has become a familiar aid in daily hygiene.
