A urostomy is a surgically created opening usually on the abdomen. A urostomy allows urine to flow out of the body after the bladder has been removed. A urostomy may also be called a urinary diversion. With a urostomy, the bladder and urethra have been removed or bypassed. When a person has a urostomy, urine is no longer eliminated through the urethra. Instead, it is eliminated through the stoma.
